CAMP HILL, Pa. (May 21, 2008) – Family Medicine Geriatrics and Wellness (FMGW) was presented the Quality Innovator – Small Practice award at the Keystone Health Care Quality Awards banquet for its implementation of a top-notch electronic health record system. The awards program is sponsored by Quality Insights of Pennsylvania, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for the Commonwealth.
Dr. Joseph Mambu and his staff serve patients in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes and FMGW’s office. This necessitated a good electronic health record (EHR) system that could track patients’ records from setting to setting.
Immediate changes were noticed following the implementation of the EHR system. Issues that arose after hours are now handled more efficiently since Dr. Mambu can access patient records from home. Abnormal lab results that are called in after office hours no longer require a visit to the emergency room. The EHR system also includes a patient portal that allows patients to request medication refills, make appointments, pay bills and ask questions remotely.
Quality Insights of Pennsylvania, under contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), protects Medicare patient rights and works collaboratively with hospitals and other health care providers in Pennsylvania to assist them in their efforts to improve the quality of the care they deliver. To learn more about this non-profit organization, visit www.qipa.org or call 1.800.MEDICARE and ask for information about Quality Insights of Pennsylvania. CMS is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Over the next year, the office will be involved in a project to help improve the care of their diabetic patients while also transforming into a “Patient Centered – Medical Home”. Take a look at the article in the Philadelphia Inquirer about the project.

Family Medicine, Geriatrics and Wellness will soon be instituting a state of the art, computerized patient preventive medicine and chronic disease tracking system. This system will electronically “look into” our practice management, billing and other systems to automatically identify when it is time to remind you to take a particular healthcare action – to schedule a preventive medicine visit, a re-check of your chronic condition, or a lab test or other health screening activity based on nationally recognized recommendations. The system will automatically call you and leave you a reminder that one of these kinds of actions is due. We want you to be aware of this new program and that some initial problem issues can be anticipated.
Some examples of these problems are:
- Because of the patient privacy rules and the fact that we can’t know who may answer the phone or listen to a message, we can’t provide too much detailed information over the phone. We apologize in advance for any confusion this may cause.
- We may find that the name, address, phone number, age or sex in our system is wrong, but we will then know to fix it.
- We may find that you have been assigned a diagnosis or disease code in error, but we will then know to fix it.
- We may find that your case doesn’t fit the general rules we have established, but then we will know to modify them.
- We may find that you are receiving this healthcare elsewhere, say from a specialist. That’s fine with us and reassuring to know you are getting the care you need.
Please be patient with us as we implement this new system. As we find and correct the errors in our systems and revise the computer’s rules, the number of problem calls will decline. If you have any questions or comments, please address them to the receptionist to help us correct any problems with the system so we may better serve your healthcare needs.
